Half-Way-Tree Square was the scene of chaos on Sunday when shortly after 2pm pedestrians and motorists were forced to take evasive action when gunfire rang out in the busy commercial district
The drama unfolded when a traffic cop who was standing in the square with his colleagues, was attacked and disarmed by a man said to be of unsound mind.Three persons including a woman were left nursing gunshot wounds following the incident.
Police report that Kevin Dunchie, 33, began firing the weapon indiscriminately .When the shooting ended, the mentally ill man was challenged by a plain clothed police officer who shot him in the leg, thigh and buttocks.
The weapon was recovered from him. It was then discovered that two persons had been shot.
Dunchie and the two victims were rushed to hospital for treatment.
The police say their injuries are not considered life threatening.
